Comments: Introduced in Lake Kariba to create an open water pelagic fishery (Ref. 7270). Now constitutes the basis for a successful fishery (c 15000 t shared with Zambia). Diaptomids and larger cladocerans decreased rapidly after the sardines were introduced and Chaoborus has apparently disappeared (Ref. 13055). Has become a major item in the diet of the indigenous Hydrocynus vittatus (Ref. 52848) after its introduction to Lake Kariba.     Ref:  Thys van den Audenaerde, D.F.E., 1994
