Introduction of mrigal (Indian major carp) caused significant changes in diversifying number of cultured fish species in Vietnam. Together with rohu, mrigal is also widely cultured in India and other Asian countries.
Mrigal has become an important cultured fish species in Vietnam since 1986 (after only 2 years of transplantation) as it has a number of good characteristics such as: fast growing, high fecundity species and easy response to induced breeding, high market value and good income for the fish farmers. In recent years, mrigal contributed 15-20% total fresh water fish production from aquaculture in Vietnam. In 1997, Fifty 5-6 months old (50 g) fingerlings collected from the Ganges River at Patna, Bihar, India were shipped to Vietnam (RIA No. 1, Hanoi) under the International Network on Genetics in Aquaculture (INGA) (Ref. 12338).
