Paracanthocobitis marmorata differs from all congeners by combination of the following characters: lateral line incomplete, ending just beyond dorsal-fin insertion; dorsal fin with 9½-10½ branched rays; absence of axillary pelvic lobe; absence of black stripe along side of body; marmorated pattern of dark lines and blotches between irregularly shaped dorsal saddles dark blotches along side of body; teardrop-shaped black spot on upper margin of the base of caudal fin; upper caudal fin with 8 branched rays (Ref. 117351).
