Etymology: Nandus: 'Nandus' is a Bengali local name, but it lacks a proper reference; ‘nanda’ is a Bengali fish name but probably for a different species (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers).

Adults occur frequently in ditches and inundated fields. Common in summer months when it is collected from dried-up beds of tanks, beels, bheries and others. Found most commonly in standing or sluggish waters of lakes, reservoirs or canals (Ref. 12693). Feed on aquatic insects and fishes (Ref. 12693). A high-prized fish and sold fresh.
