Indo-West Pacific: central Honshu in Japan southward to Taiwan. Also found in Indonesia which is a new record for the northeastern Indian Ocean (Ref. 5978).

Found usually occurs in small loose groups, on muddy bottoms of fairly deep water down to 100 m, and rises vertically up to 15 m, to feed on plankton drifting over (Ref. 48635, 90102).
