This species is a synonym of Pyrrhulina australis Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870) following Zarske & Géry (2004). Ongoing revision will resolve potential taxonomic problems.

The male only tends the clutch which is usually located on a leave for about 20 hours. The eggs then fall to the ground where they hatch after 10 more hours.
