Etymology: Paraliparis: Greek, para = the side of + Greek, liparis = fat (Ref. 45335).

Issue
Considered as a subspecies in the literature since 1982. Therefore the upraise at species rank here is considered as a provisionally accepted name, until more works are conducted on P. copei susbepcies to fix their status.
