Etymology: Etropus: Greek, etron, -on = lower abdomen + Greek, pous = feet.

A subspecies is recognized for a long time in the Pacific Ocean Etropus delsmani pacificus Nielsen, 1963, that is recognized in FishBase as a provisionally valid species. More studies are needed to clearly differentiate it (MArch 2021).
