Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Primarily found in well shaded peat forest blackwater swamps and creeks which drained out such swamps; the beds are usually covered with dense leaf litter and lots of roots and plants. The free water area is often small, with pH of about 6.0 (Ref. 78499); very soft and deep (up to 1.3 m ) substrate (Ref. 57235).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01000 (0.00376 - 0.02663), b=2.97 (2.75 - 3.19), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  3.3   ±0.4 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  High, minimum population doubling time less than 15 months (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
