Etymology: Callionymus: Greek, kallion, comparative of kallos = beautiful + Greek, onyma = name; with a better name.
Eponymy: In Greek mythology, Io was one of the mortal lovers of the god Zeus. In an attempt to hide her from his wife, Hera, Zeus transformed Io into a white heifer. Fricke gives no rationale for his choice of name. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
