Etymology: Careproctus: Greek, kara = face + Greek, proktos = anus (Ref. 45335); discoveryae: Named for RRS 'Discovery'.
Eponymy: ‘Discovery’ (built 1962) was a Royal Research Ship from which the holotypes were caught. The present day ‘RRS Discovery’ was built in 2013. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 41; Anal soft rays: 35; Vertebrae: 45. This species is distinguished from its congeners in having the following characters: 22 pectoral fin rays, probably 5 caudal fin rays; 45 median vertebrae; the gill opening reaching the base of the first pectoral fin ray; opercular flap extending behind the pectoral base; head 25.2% SL, pre anal 37.8%; dark peritoneum (Ref. 75876).
