Etymology: Clarias: Greek, chlaros = lively, in reference to the ability of the fish to live for a long time out of water; microspilus: Derived from the Greek 'mikros' (small) and 'spilos' (spot), in reference to the very small white spots arranged in a longitudinal and several transverse series on the body.
