Etymology: Ophthalmolycus: Greek, ophthalmos = eye + Greek, lykos = wolf (Ref. 45335); lacrimegalos: Name 'lacrimegalos' from the Latin word 'lacrima' and Greek word 'megalos', meaning 'tear' and 'large', in reference to the large lachrymal bone of the new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: six branchiostegal rays; lachrymal enlarged and partly overlapping upper jaw; single posterior nasal pore; two postorbital pores (positions one and four); 6+0 infraorbital pores; lateral line double; 97 dorsal-fin rays; 79 anal-fin rays; 17 pectoral-fin rays; 23 abdominal and 101 total vertebrae; body scaled toward gill opening; presence of scales on abdomen; pectoral axil and in predorsal area; absence of pyloric caeca; presence of pseudobranch; and head and body dark, lacking pattern, mouth cavity pale-coloured (Ref. 138161)
