Etymology: Chortiheros: Named after the Ch’orti’ people, an indigenous Maya people of southeastern Guatemala, northwestern Honduras, and northern El Salvador, and after whom also the Chortis Block as one of the main geological components of Middle America is named and to whose northern part the new genus is the oldest and most isolated endemic lineage; thus the name Chorti is combined with the old cichlid genus name Heros (meaning hero), referring to the hero of the Chortis..
