Freshwater; brackish; benthopelagic; anadromous (Ref. 51243). Temperate; 4°C - 20°C (Ref. 2059); 69°N - 43°N, 11°W - 58°E
Europe: several countries in central and eastern Europe. Northeast Atlantic: Ireland to Netherlands, Germany and the countries along the coast of the Baltic Sea. Maritime stocks may be extinct (Ref. 4537).

In brackish water and main rivers; no evidence that it enters marine waters (Ref. 59043). Also non-migratory freshwater populations (Ref. 13696). Feeds on zooplankton, supplemented by benthic invertebrates in adults. Extinct since about 1940 (Ref. 59043).
