Etymology: Filimanus: Latin, filum = thread + latin, manus = hand (Ref. 45335);  similis: From the Latin similis, meaning similar, in reference to the considerable similarity to Filimanus heptadactyla and the other species of Filimanus with shorter pectoral filaments (Ref. 39607).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-13; Anal soft rays: 10 - 12. Distinguished by having seven pectoral filaments, not reaching midpoint of anal fin; depth of posterior margin of maxilla less than eye diameter; snout pointed; and body in life, usually brown above and golden or silvery below.
