Etymology: Microsynodontis: Greek, mikros = small + Greek, synodon = with the teeth growing all together (Ref. 45335);  emarginata: Species name from the Latin emarginatus, meaning notched at the apex, in reference to the distinctive shape of the caudal fin (Ref. 52369).

Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 10 - 12; Vertebrae: 34 - 37. Diangosis: caudal fin emarginated (Ref. 52369, 81251). Body slender and elongate; adipose fin moderately long (base 27.9-30.2% SL); caudal peduncle depth 8.4-9.8% SL; snout length 41.4-47.9% SL; eye diameter 17.8-21.2% SL; both sexes with short (< 0.1 mm) tubercles on dorsal and lateral surfaces of head; supracleithral process not reaching to vertical through posterior-most tip of nuchal shield; dorsal spine curved; anterior edge of pectoral spine with antrorse serrations (Ref. 81251).
