Etymology: Nannostomus: Latin, nannus = small + Greek, stoma = mouth (Ref. 45335).

Issue
This species is so far recorded from two localities, that of the type specimens given above and the Rio Ereré,Amazonas, Brazil. See Weitzman & Fernandez (1989) for a discussion of these localities. This species has been exported, as an aquarium fish, into the USA and Germany as bycatch with Paracheirodon simulans. See Bork (1998) and Bork and Mayland (1998) for accounts of this species as an aquarium fish.
