Oligosarcus platensis is distinguished from O. amome in having premaxillary teeth in the outer series tricuspidate (vs. pentacuspidate); premaxillary inner series with teeth bi to pentacuspidate (vs. penta to heptacuspidate) ; 17 maxillary teeth (uni to tricuspidate) (vs. ten to eleven maxillary teeth (uni to pentacuspidate)); dentary teeth uni to pentacuspidate (vs. uni to heptacuspidate); 27 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 20 to 23); 44 scales on lateral line (vs. 39 to 41); and 24 predorsal scales (vs. 14 to 16) (Ref. 99820).
