Etymology: Parotocinclus: Greek, para in the side of + greek, ous, otis = ear + Greek, kygklos, ou = a fish (Ref. 45335); fluminense: Name from the Latin words 'flumine' meaning river and 'ense' meaning natural, in allusion to the Baixada Fluminense, relative to the area surrounding the city of Rio de Janeiro in which the species inhabits (Ref. 117349).
