Etymology: Photonectes: Greek, photos = light + Greek, nekton = swimmer (Ref. 45335).

Taxonomic Remarks
Taxonomic status of this species remains uncertain and is treated as species inquirenda. No other specimens agree with original description of P. cornutus Ref. 120405).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 15; Anal soft rays: 18. This species is distinguished from its congeners by lacking the blue luminous tissue on body and the presence of a short dorsal appendage on stem of the mental barbel proximally to the bulb and a long distal appendage extending from the distal tip of the bulb (see Beebe, 1933, Ref. 120405;fig. 6)
