Etymology: Placidochromis: Latin, placidus = of peaceful or tranquile appearance + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); mbunoides: = mbuna-like; named for the resemblance of its body shape to some of the mbuna (a group of mainly rock-dwelling species) from Lake Malawi (Ref. 55898).
