Inhabits rivers (Ref. 12251). Abundant, occurs in the zones of cascades along with Krobia itanyi, Corydoras guianensis, Characidium fasciadorsale and Cyphocharax spilurus, in quiet, shallow and sunny waters. Sympatric with G. oelemariensis in the Oelemari River, Suriname (Ref. 26372). Feeds on small invertebrates. Breeding may occur 3 to 4 times per year. Spawning takes place in anfractuosities of rocks so that guarding is easier for females which are generally smaller than males. Males defend the nest. Parental care in terms of food supply and protection lasts for 1 to 3 months (Ref. 35237).
