This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D X,16, with third dorsal-fin spine longest, prolonged; pectoral rays 18; lateral-line scales 42; no papillae on posterior margin of orbit; soft part of dorsal with low scaly sheath; subopercle and interopercle are indistinctly serrated; caudal fin weakly concave centrally, with elongate filaments extending from second to uppermost and second to lowermost branched rays (Ref. 118516).

The specimen was caught in the same haul with the following species : Roa jayakari, Heniochus acuminatus, Pristigenys refulgens, Wattsia mossambica as well as several other reef-associated fish species (Ref. 118516).
