Etymology: Hoplostethus: Greek, hoplon = weapon + Greek, stetho, stethion = brest; literal = to prick a little breast (Ref. 45335); platynotus: Name 'platynotus' from Greek words 'platys' and 'noton', meaning 'flat' and 'back', referring to the unique flattened and straight dorsal profile before dorsal-fin origin of the species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: body soft and dusky; bony ridges on the head and fin rays delicate; body scales deciduous; gular region covered with ctenoid scales; pelvic-fin spine smooth on its anterior edge; head depth smaller than its length, 37.2%-38.6% SL or 94.7%-99.2% HL; pectoral-fin length 35.6%-37.8% SL, with tip reaching beyond vertical through anal-fin origin to middle of anal-fin base; abdominal scutes well developed, 12-16; pectoral-fin rays uniformly black, 17-19; gill rakers on outer surface of first arch 6-7 + 1 + 13-14 = 21; pre-dorsal scales 24-27; pyloric caeca 32; moderate body size 230 mm SL (Ref. 133164).
