Etymology: Aspidoras: Greek, aspis, -idos = shield + Greek, dora = skin (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Carlos (Károly) Lako (1895–1960) was a Hungarian who lived in Brazil (1920–1960) and worked as an osteologist and taxidermist at the Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro. He collected the holotype. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
