Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 21 - 25. Head length 2.7-2.9 times in SL; male with anal fin extending about to mid-length of caudal fin; 3 dark stripes on brown body of both sexes; anal fin of live adult male with dark margin and blue submarginal band (Ref. 43281).
Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Found in marshes and slow flowing streams (Ref. 43281). Specimens were collected between overflowed plants; clear and colourless water; water data taken in Oct. 1999, 2:00 pm: pH 6.6, 180 µS/cm and 25.8 °C (Ref. 78499).
