Etymology: Apistogramma: Greek, apisto = uncertain + Greek, gramma = graphic signal (Ref. 45335); alacrina: Named with reference to the dark lining of the pectoral fin base, resembling dark hair (Latin 'crinis') extending from an armpit (Latin 'ala', 'axilla').

Distinguished uniquely from all other congeners in having a prominent dark blotch around the ventral base of the pectoral fin, separate from a small dark spot at the dorsal base of the pectoral fin (Ref. 52483).
