Etymology: Badis: 'badis' is presumably a Bengali local name, possibly derived from 'bhedo' or 'bheda', but it lacks a proper reference. Probably incorrect etymology (J. خارهاي باله پشتي (کل) : 16 - 17; شعاع نرم باله پشتي (کل) : 9; خارهاي باله مخرجي: 3; شعاع نرم باله مخرجي: 7 - 8; مهره ها: 28 - 29. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: with a post nuchal hump; a conspicuous dark blotch covering superficial part of cleithrum above pectoral-fin base; with a dark anterior dorsal-fin blotch between 3rd to 5th spines (consistently present in live and preserved specimens); scales in lateral row 27-30; circumpeduncular scale rows 18-20; vertebrae 28-29; first gill arch with 9 rakers; no dark blotch on the dorsolateral aspect of caudal peduncle (Ref. 124777).
