Etymology: Rivulus: Latin, rivus = stream (Ref. 45335); flammaecauda: Name from Latin, 'flamma' meaning 'with flames' and 'cauda; for 'tail', referring to the flame-like radial lines on male caudal fins, a trait apparently unique among known Rivulus species.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: short pelvic fins, not reaching insertion of anal-fin base; truncate caudal fin in males; with few scales in the longitudinal series, 37-38 (Ref. 130065).
Cross section: oval.
The type locality, a black water creek was located in primary forest under a thick canopy and where water depth was only a few cms, likely due to the flat terrain. The creek is divided into several smaller streams and covered a wide stretch of the forest floor. Rivulus flammaecauda was more abundant in deeper, open areas (Ref. 130065).
