Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 14; Anal soft rays: 7. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: moderate to strongly falcate dorsal fin with first 1-3 rays generally extending beyond the last dorsal fin ray when adpressed and by having plicate lower lips that branch distally and exhibit deeply branched grooves and deeply transected ridges, particularly posteriorly; moderately molariform teeth on the lower portion of a heavy pharyngeal arch; red caudal fin (Ref. 132999).
