Etymology: Pareiorhaphis: Greek, pareia = jaw + Greek, rhaphis = needle (Ref. 45335)torrenticola: Name torrenticola from Latin words 'torrens,-entis' and 'cola', meaning 'swift or violent stream, torrent, torrential' and 'dweller, inhabitant', in reference to its habit of living in very strong waters.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: anterior and median portions of lower lip with distinctly coalesced, longitudinally elongated papillae; a series of platelets covering the pectoral girdle between insertions of pectoral-fin spines with unique pattern consisting of a continuous irregular line varying in size and spacing; absence of the maxillary barbel in the lateral margin of the lower lip; teeth in each premaxilla 60-82 and dentary 55-80; club-shaped pectoral-fin spine; depressed head, with head depth 38.5-45.2% HL; absence of the first dorsal-fin spinelet (132467).

The species inhabits clear, fast-flowing water, with a substrate composed of smooth rocky bed and fragmented marginal vegetation. At the type locality (0.5 to 1 m deep and 10 m wide), individuals are abundant in cracks and crevices in the bedrock and can be readily captured manually (Ref. 132467).
