This species is distinguished from congeneric species by the following set of characters: longitudinal row scales 33-36; transverse row scales 11-13; predorsal scales 21-25; snout length 9.7-11.1% of SL; upper jaw length 14.4-17.5% of SL; caudal fin length 27.9-40.4% of SL; opercular scales cycloid; body with two interrupted, vertical light brown bands, below dorsal fin and on caudal peduncle. Colouration: second dorsal fin with diffuse white spots; caudal fin dark, no spots; head and trunk of adults with brilliant blue or green spots; caudal fin base in juveniles with three distinct bright markings (Ref. 133165).
