Etymology: Etheostoma:Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335).

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: possession of a unique allozyme allelic combination of isocitrate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase; modally 13 pectoral fin rays; lateral blotches on the anterior half of the body that are taller than wide; average of 49.3 lateral line scales and modally 10 dorsal fin spines (Ref. 137538).
