Etymology: Scobinancistrus: Latin, scobis = sawdust + Greek, agkistron = hook (Ref. 45335); raonii: Name 'raonii' in honor of indigenous leader Cacique Raoni Metuktire for his struggle to preserve the Amazon rainforest and its indigenous peoples.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: caudal peduncle 11.7-13.5% in SL; large yellow irregularly shaped and widely spaced spots over entire body, spots larger than pupil diameter; last dorsal-fin ray not reaching adipose-fin plate when adpressed in specimens larger than 80 mm SL; lack of contact between hyomandibular and quadrate posteroventrally; lack of yellow large distal band on the dorsal and caudal fins (Ref. 137688).
