Etymology: Leporinus: Latin, lepus, leporis = rabbit (Ref. 45335); inexpectatus: Name 'inexpectatus' in allusion to the surprising previous inclusion of this species in the type series of Leporinus paranensis.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal soft rays: 8. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: three dark midlateral blotches on the body; 12 scale rows around caudal peduncle; a terminal mouth (mouth cleft longitudinally aligned with ventral border of eye) in specimens larger than 100 mm SL; body pale brown to silver and slightly yellow to hyaline fins in live specimens (Ref. 137706).
