Etymology: Leporinus: Latin, lepus, leporis = rabbit (Ref. 45335); oliveirai: Name 'oliveirai' in honor of Nogueira da Silva, for his intensive work on introducing fishes bred and raised in captivity into the International Aquarium trade.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal soft rays: 8. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: three unicuspid teeth on the premaxilla and four on the dentary; 12 circumpeduncular scale series; dark blotches on the trunk; large round dark blotches over the body; pattern of dark blotches on the body in adults including one large midlateral blotch below posterior dorsal-fin base that is isolated from neighboring midlateral blotches by a wide gap; 1-2 large blotches in region ventral to the lateral line between the pectoral and pelvic fins (Ref. 137758).

This species inhabits high altitude streams with fast flowing clear and black water (Ref. 137758).
