Etymology: Rhyacoglanis: From the Greek words 'rhyax' (torrent) and 'glanis' (catfish), indicating a catfish inhabiting running waters in reference to its habitat (Ref. 128485); varii: Name 'varii' in honor of ichthyologist Richard P. Vari (1949-2016) for his outstanding contributions to the systematics of Neotropical fishes.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: dark brown vertical bar below the dorsal-fin base not confluent with a dark brown bar below the adipose-fin base; abrupt thinning of the subdorsal dark brown bar ventrally; dark brown spots sparsely distributed on the body; solid dark brown bar on caudal peduncle; posterior tip of the post-cleithral process reaching vertical through the base of the dorsal-fin spine; long distance of anus to anal-fin origin (mean = 11.4±0.8%), maxillary barbel length (mean = 79.6±5.8%), and caudal peduncle depth (mean = 9.5±0.5%); minor posterior nostril to eye distance (mean = 4.8±0.9%), body depth (mean = 18.2±1.5%), and postcleithral process length (mean = 12.9±1.1%); anterior serrae distributed along the entire margin (Ref. 137787).

This species inhabits shallow, running water with substrate composed of pebbles, rocks, sand, and organic litter from the surrounding marginal vegetation (Ref. 137787).
