Etymology: Triplophysa: Greek, triplos = thrice + Greek, physa = tube (Ref. 45335); wenshanensis: Name 'wenshanensis' from the type locality of the species, Wenshan Prefecture, in Yunnan Province.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 8 - 10; Anal soft rays: 6 - 8; Vertebrae: 42 - 43. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: nearly cone-shaped head; light brown to flesh pink body colour with faint brown blotches; reduced but still discernible eye dots; pelvic-fin tip not reaching the anus; concave distal margin of the dorsal fin; scales absent; barbel-like tip of the anterior nostril; and vertebrae 4 + 38-39 (Ref. 137951).
