Eponymy: Edward Frederick Lovett (1857–1943) of Hobart, Tasmania, supplied the author with ‘beautifully preserved specimens’ of L. sealii, as well as many other Tasmanian fishes. Matthew Seal (1834–1897) was President of the Tasmanian Fisheries Commission and Chairman of the Fisheries Board. This species is probably named after him, though this is not made clear in the original description. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Occurs in coastal seas, estuaries and rivers. An annual species, with an anadromous life cycle. In spring, large shoals of adults migrate from the sea into rivers and estuaries to spawn. Eggs are deposited on the bottom or among debris. They hatch in 2-3 weeks, and the fry are swept out to sea where they undergo development. Adults die shortly after spawning. Also known as Derwent whitebait (Ref. 44894).
