Etymology: Apristurus: a-, Latin privative, i.e., without; pristis, from pristes (Gr.), sawyer (but here meaning saw); oura (Gr.), tail, referring to absence of saw-toothed crest of enlarged dermal denticles along upper edge of caudal fin as found in the closely related Pristiurus (=Galeus). Western Atlantic: from Davis Strait, Canada, south to off Delaware Bay, USA and off Suriname (Ref. 13608). Eastern Atlantic: Morocco and northwest Africa (Ref. 40643).

Short snout, small eye, shorter gill openings. Uniform grayish brown below and above in alcohol (Ref. 6032).
Inhabits the continental slope. Maximum length unknown, adolescent at 51 cm TL. Oviparous (Ref. 50449). Usually caught in deep exploratory trawls, and has no commercial interest (Ref. 117245).
