Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 10. This species is characterized by the following: pectoral rays 13-14; second dorsal fin with 9 segmented rays; premaxillary teeth 27-32; predorsal midline scales absent, the most anterior scale along the midline located below the anterior part of the second dorsal fin; males with more and larger symphyseal teeth than females (2 vs. 0); transverse scales in forward series 1-4, in backward series 7-9; typical color of males, body bright red on the flanks, orange on the belly and on the back; head bluish on cheeks, reddish nose; females greyish to brownish (Ref. 72456).
Occurs in clear, high gradient streams with rocky bottom and large pools. Found on the bottom of the river, on top of rocks but also observed swimming in open water in the stream between rocks or in large pools; and observed from 90-200 m high in altitude (Ref. 72457).
