Ecology
Marine; demersal; depth range 1 - 1500 m (Ref. 114953), usually ? - 200 m (Ref. 114953). Temperate; 49°N - 70°N, 32°W - 15°E (Ref. 114953)
NE Atlantic: Iceland to the British isles. Formerly more widespread, including the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa, with range thought to be reduced due to fishing.

A demersal species known from the coast to upper continental slope, possibly to ca. 1500 m and most common at ca. 200 m. Males mature at about 185 cm TL, femals about 197 cm TL. Egg cases are laid during spring and summer with long embryonic development. Feeds on benthic invertebrates and fishes. The young hatch at ca. 29 cm TL from very large egg cases (up to 25 cm long (Ref. 114953).
