Distribution: Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Japan to Australia. Eyes on either side of the head. A single spine and five soft rays in pelvic fins; pelvics equally developed and short based. Dorsal fin origin at posterior nostril of blind side; pectoral fins well developed. Branchiostegal membranes not united. Lateral line present on both sides. Anus on eyed side. Vertebrae 10 + 24-25. The status of the genera Citharus versus Eucitharus needs clarification.
