Semotilus thoreauianus is distinguished from Semotilus atromaculatus by the following characters: larger lateral scales (45-52); wider, more diffuse stripe (darker on young) along side; stouter body; less distinct dorsal and caudal spots; and breeding males with orange to pink underside, yellow fins, usually 8 large hooked tubercles on head (Ref. 86798).
Inhabits sand- and gravel-bottomed pools of creeks and small rivers (Ref. 86798).
