Etymology: Alestopetersius: Greek, a = without + Greek, lestes = thief + Peters, 1877, naturalist, expeditionary in Asia.
Eponymy: Lake Leopold (now Lake Mai-Ndombe), Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the holotype locality. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
