背面の脊椎 (合計) : 12 - 15; 背鰭 (合計) : 13 - 18; 肛門の骨: 3; 臀鰭: 7 - 10; 脊つい: 31 - 32. Diagnosis: 3 rows of scales between anterior parts of upper and lower lateral line; lips fleshy; upper edge of lower jaw horizontal when mouth is closed (Ref. 7378, 52307, 52346, 53405). Lower jaw teeth on a distinctly shelf-like elevated processus on dentary in juveniles and mature females (Ref. 7378).
Cross section: compressed.
Prefers brackish water but is also found further upstream in rivers (Ref. 3032). Opportunistic benthic macrophage (Ref. 52346). Prefers insects and their larvae; maternal mouthbrooder that does not pair-bond (Ref. 52307).
