Inhabits estuaries, lowland rivers and tributaries, sometimes penetrating well inland. Favors warm (25°-30°C), shallow water in areas with dense aquatic plant growth. A shoal-forming species which swims near the surface. Mainly herbivorous but insects are also consumed (Ref. 44894).
