Etymology: Natalichthys: From the South African Museum, where the fish was found (1980) (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: This is an acronym for the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) of South Africa, honoured for its contributions to the ichthyology of South African waters. Its research vessel David Davies collected the type of the whiptail. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 1; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 52 - 53; Anale stekels: 0; Anale zachte stralen: 42 - 43. Gill membranes fused but free from isthmus. Lateral line short. No scales on cheeks.
