Etymology: Xiphophorus: Greek, xiphos = sword + Greek, pherein = to carry (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Heinz Birchmann was an Austrian aquarist from Vienna who helped the senior author, P Lechner, collect the type specimen (1987) in Hidalgo State, Mexico, during a botanical expedition. He was the first to import the species to Europe and breed it there. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
